Heavy snow and cold weather caused more than the usual amount of hardship Sunday (Jan. 14) in Tennessee.

Heavy snow and cold weather have caused more than the usual amount of inconvenience and hardship in the state of Tennessee this weekend.

In Clarksville, over ten inches of snow caused a power failure which left more than 45,000 persons in four county area without heat over much of the weekend. Clarksville Mayor Charles Crow declared a state of emergency in the city when it became obvious that ice and snow was snapping utility lines faster than repair crews could restore them. At one point Saturday night, repair work had to be suspended shortly after dark when it became impossible for crews to locate trouble areas. Local civil defense and Red Cross agencies and Red Cross agencies set up emergency shelters at seven locations in the Clarksville area where food, blankets and emergency medical supplies were provided. Army authorities at nearby Fort Campbell made barracks available to more than 2,000 servicemen and their families who live off-post in the areas affected by the blackout. The situation remained critical until nearly this morning as numerous families - particularly in rural areas, went into their third day without power. Although emergency service has been restored to most areas, power company officials said it will be several days before service is returned to normal. (TAPE OUT)
