  • Description

United States' President, Gerald Ford, made his first "meet the people" political outing since last week's assassination attempt on his life on Thursday (11 September) when he toured New Hampshire townships to campaign in support of Republican Senate candidate, Louis C. Wyman.

Mr. Ford travelling in the open presidential limousine visited a number of towns in the state, including Keen and Milford. Republican organisers hope that his visit will boost the turnout in next Tuesday's (16 September) elections and ensure a victory for Mr. Wyman.

There was on obvious increase in security for the tour, although on-the-spot observers suggested that the President appeared to be wearing a bullet-proof vest for the occasion. Secret Service agents and White House officials refuse either to confirm or deny that Mr. Ford was wearing any protective clothing.

The Secret Service cordon around the presidential limousine appeared no greater than it was in Sacramento, California, ,last Friday (5 September) when Lynette Fromme -- a follower of convicted ritual murderer Charles Manson -- aimed a loaded gun at the President.

Miss Fromme has been charge with violating the Presidential Assassination, Kidnap and Assault Act, which carried a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. Strict watches are being carried out on other members of the Manson "family" of followers.
