  • Description

The funeral of Povl Bang-Jensen, the former United Nations senior political officer found shot in a New York, USA, park nine days ago --- took place in Copenhagen, Denmark, Dec.3.

His widow and four of their five children, attended the ceremony at Solbjerg cemetery. More than 300 came to the church to pay their last respects to the Danish diplomat -- including representatives of the Danish Government.

Bang-Jensen disappeared on his way home to Long Island, Nov.23. On Nov.26, his body was found in heavily-wooded Alley Pond Park, New York. Police reported death from gunshot wounds. A pistol was tightly clutched in his right hand. In his pocket was a suicide note. The discovery ended a nation-wide hunt by Federal agents and police.

While serving as Assistant Secretary to the United Nations special committee on Hungary in 1957, Bang-Jensen was dismissed for refusing to hand over to the secretariat, names of some 80 Hungarian witnesses whom he had interviewed in an inquiry into the 1957 uprising and its suppression. He feared the list would fall into Communist hands.

Bang-Jensen's death roused great indignation throughout Denmark. Claimed Copenhagen's leading newspaper .... "If he is dead, this is murder - whichever way it may have happened. It has an indissoluble connection with strife over the Hungarian committee of the United Nations."
