  • Description

In Liverpool's Toxeth district on Tuesday (8 Aug) workmen were busy boarding up broken windows and doorways, and effecting temporary repairs to houses and other buildings damaged during four nights of racial disturbances. The trouble reached a head on Monday evening (7 Aug) when gangs of white and coloured youths smashed their way through the district and throw up street barricades.

The trouble is over the allocation of houses in a new estate. White people living in neighbouring tenements have complained that coloured families have been granted an unfairly-high proportion of the new homes. The Liverpool Corporation has denied that allocations are influenced by colour, but the police have said urgent discussions are needed if tensions in the area are to be eased.
