    At the first session of the Washington-Saigon summit conference in Hawaii Monday (17 February), President Johnson pledged that the United States intends "to continue fighting with South Vietnam in defeating the Communist aggressors". Mr. Johnson added that the U.S. will not re???eg on its pledge.

    Mr. Johnson also told South Vietnam's Chief of State and Prime Minister that the United States will also help the Saigon government institute immediate social and economic reform in their country.

    Prime Minister Nguyen Cao Ky, sitting across from President Johnson at the conference, also pledged that his country would continue the struggle against "the Communist aggressors".

    The conference is taking place at the U.S. pacific Command Headquarters located at Camp Smith, Hawaii.

    Though both President Johnson and Prime Minister Ky pledged to continue the war in Vietnam, in President Johnson's words, as "brothers in arms", both sides also agreed that the search for a "just and honourable peace" would continue.

    The Washington-Saigon summit conference is scheduled to end Tuesday (8 February).
