Background: The occupying Israeli authorities in Gaza have been carrying out a census of the population over the past five days. It is being carried out by the Central Bureau of Statistics at the request of the Military Governor.
The huge task is complicated by the large number of refugees in the area, and 2,500 Arabic-speaking enumerators and 300 supervisors were enrolled for the job. Planning for the project began two months ago.
Gaza town has been under curfew, and the streets were deserted save for the Israeli officials and their loudspeaker lorries patrolling the area and giving instructions.
In a further step towards returning the area to normal, the authorities have announced that schools will be open from this weekend.
