  • Description

Emperor Hirohito of Japan was greeted by Queen Elizabeth when he arrived in London on Tuesday (5 October) to begin an historic state visit. It's the first time a ruling Emperor of Japan has left that country during the two-thousand five-hundred year history of its "chrysanthemum" throne. It's also a break with pest tradition for an Emperor to appear in public so frequently and conspicuously. The Emperor and Empresses were driven in State Procession from Victoria Station to Buckingham Palace, after their arrival from france. During the procession a bystander threw a coat in front of the Royal carriage, but the action was considered harmless by the police who released the man responsible. Emperor Hirohito laid a wreath to the Unknown Warrior at Westminster Abbey later in the day.
