    Background: GENOA, ITALY

Third division Covese suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of first division Sampdoria on August 29, in the first round of the Italian Cup. Sampdoria, who recently signed Liverpool captain Graeme Souness, won the match by eight goals to one. Beccalossi and Vialli both scored twice. Covese's only goal came from Fratena. The match took place in Genoa and was watched by a capacity crowd. Souness played a prominent role in midfield, while Sampdoria's other foreign player, Trevor Francis, played a good attacking game without actually scoring one of the eight goals.
