Background: Tennis...and at the Wimbledon Championships in England on Monday (3 July) two former winners of Wimbledon singles titles had mixed fortunes in the fourth round. John Newcombe went down in straight sets to Raul Ramirez of Mexico while in the women's matches Billie-Jean King disposed of Britain's Sue Barker to move into the quarter finals.
SYNOPSIS: Miss Barker, who had defeated the up-and-coming American star Pam Shriver in the previous round, found Mrs. King's play too powerful in the first set. A swirling wind on the centre court also troubled her and when she dropped this point the set was Mrs. King's by six games to two. In the second set the British player showed more fight. On this occasion a fine backhand volley has Mrs. King stretching, and the American's return went wide of the court.
Match point with the number 14 seed Miss Barker serving again. However her next shot is too long and Mrs. King takes the set 6-2 and with it the match. Mrs. King, seeded number five this year, will meet the favourite and former champion Chris Evert, in the quarter-finals.
Later in the day in the men's competition, the number seven seed, Raul Ramirez of Mexico met Australia's John Newcombe, a long-time favourite with the Wimbledon crowds. Ramirez has been in top form in the tournament so far and took the first two sets 6-2 and 9-8.
In the third set Newcombe, who says he will be going into semi-retirement after the tournament, found some form. On this occasion the 34-year-old Australian took the point with a fine overhead volley.
Match point with Ramirez serving. The 25-year-old Mexican is the only seed yet to drop a set in the tournament. After a long, tightly fought rally Ramirez made a fine recovery to take the game, set and match. He now goes on to meet Jimmy Connors of the United states, seeded number two, in the quarter finals. The final score 6-2, 9-8, 6-3.
