  • Description

Ten metal workers' labour leaders are staging a hunger strike in Montevideo to draw attention to the plight of workers at a North American owned company which recently laid off 300 men.

Students from the University in Montevideo have been demonstrating in support of the strikers.

Police used tear gas to break up the student demonstrations on Monday (July 27) when, it is reported, 300 people were arrested. Most were released within 24-hours.

The clashes, that latest in a series during the past week, took place in central Montevideo.

Meanwhile, inside the Church of Christ, the hunger strikers have sanctuary and continue with their protest, which is designed to draw attention to the months old strike of the workers against the North American owned TEM metal company. The strikers maintain there was no need to lay off 300 workers recently.
