SPEECH TRANSCRIPT (SEQUENCE TWO):
GANDHI: "Nothing is more important than the unity and integrity of our nation. India is indivisible. Secular (indistinct) is the bedrock of our nationhood. It implies more than tolerance. It involves an active effort for harmony. NO religion preaches hatred and intolerance. Vested interests, both external and internal, are inciting and exploiting communal passions and violence to divide India. Answering communalism with communalism might of the people and the government will thwart their designs. There's only one India. It belongs to us all."

Background: NEW DELHI, INDIA
India's Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi pledged on November 12 to follow his assassinated mother's domestic and foreign polices. Mr Gandhi, addressing the nation on television and radio, said India would remain non-aligned, keep a mixed economy and strive for harmony. The broadcast was Gandhi's first major policy statement since his mother was murdered by two Sikh bodyguards 12 days previously. her death set off anti-Sikh riots in which more than 1,000 people died. her son and successor, Rajiv, spoke to the nation only hours after the ruling Congress (I) Party unanimously voted him its new leader, ending speculation about a rift between his supporters and veteran politicians. In his broadcast, Gandhi also said his mother's murder was a grave and critical moment in India's history, and called for a new Indian society dedicated to work and creativity. He said India had always been friends with the East and the West, and wanted better relations between the two main powers. He said non-alignment, non-interference and peaceful co-existence were India's guiding principles.
