  • Description

The Khmer town of Kompong Trabek, about thirty miles from the capital, Phnom Penh, has been under siege by communist forces for the past three weeks. Now Khmer troops, backed dup by armour and American airstrikes, have mounted a counter-offensive, aimed at relieving the town.

Kompong Trabek lies on the strategic Highway One, which was earlier cut by North Vietnamese troops with tanks and artillery in a bid to stop the Khmers pushing through.

In the first attacks - launched at night - the khmers took heavy casualties. After the initial action, however, they had knocked out a chain of anti-aircraft guns and captured several weapons caches.

In the fighting the next day, the North Vietnamese were able to make better use of their heavy weapons and the Khmers lost several tanks. Little ground had been gained during the night, and a slight full before the dawn had given the communist the chance to regroup.

When the day's fighting ended, the Khmers had lost 128 men and 400 wounded. North Vietnamese losses had not been calculated.
