  • Description

President Nixon, battling against swelling demands for his resignation, flew to friendly territory -- Stillwater in Oklahoma -- on Saturday (11 May) and appealed to Congress to move swiftly in its inquiry for his possible impeachment.

Repeating the recent White House theme, Mr. Nixon declared he had surrendered all the evidence on Watergate -- despite demands by the House of Representatives Judiciary Committee for still more tapes and documents.

In a fairly brief reference to the arisis swirling around him, President Nixon told the graduating class at the Oklahoma State University.

Cheers and applause from the crowd drewned out the jeers and boos of a small group of protesters as the President made his appeal.

Mr. Nixon's trip to Stillwater, a small conservative college town set amid farming country, was his second journey from Washington since he released edited transcripts of White House conversations on 29 April, alienating many of his former supporters.

When Mr. Nixon arrived at the nearby Vance Air Force base, he was visibly bucyed by an ecstatic welcome from several thousand people. He declared; "when people tell me 'Hang in there, we're with you', believe me that does your heart good," and "we never give up."
