  • Description

THOUSANDS OF CHRISTIAN PILGRIMS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD MARKED GOOD FRIDAY TODAY BY RETRACING CHRIST'S LAST STEPS TO HIS CRUCIFIXION ALONG THE VIA DOLOROSA, THROUGH THE OLD WALLED CITY OF JERUSALEM.

TODAY WAS THE THIRD GOOD FRIDAY SINCE THE SIX-DAY WAR IN 1967. THERE WERE NO INCIDENTS, AND THE 15,000 PILGRIMS - MOST OF THEM ROMAN CATHOLIC - CARRIED OUT THE 14 STATIONS OF THE CROSS AT VARIOUS STAGES ALONG THE ROUTE WITHOUT ANY DISTURBANCE.

ONE OF THE LARGEST GROUPS IN THE PROCESSION WAS A BODY OF FRENCH FRANCISCAN MONKS WITH MORE THAN A DOZEN MEN BEARING A HUGE WOODEN CROSS ON THEIR SHOULDERS.

DOZENS OF TOURIST BUSES BROUGHT THE PILGRIMS INTO THE CITY AT THE JAFFA, DAMASCUS AND ST. STEPHEN'S GATE; THEY CAME MAINLY FROM FRANCE, SPAIN, ITALY AND THE UNITED STATES.

DESPITE THE REPORTED THREAT OF POSSIBLE EL FATAH COMMANDO ACTIVITY, SECURITY PRECAUTIONS BY ISRAELI AUTHORITIES WERE NOTICEABLY LIGHTER TODAY THAN ON PREVIOUS GOOD FRIDAYS. GENERALLY, THERE WERE MANY MORE PILGRIMS AND LESS POLICE. NEVERTHELESS IT WAS A QUIET DAY.

SPLITTING INTO VARIOUS NATIONAL RELIGIOUS GROUPS, THE PROCESSION TOOK OVER TWO HOURS TO WEND ITS WAY TO THE CHURCH OF THE HOLY SEPULCHRE WHERE THE LATIN PATRIARCH OF JERUSALEM, MONSIGNOR ALBERTO GORI, CELEBRATED A SPECIAL GOOD FRIDAY SERVICE.
