    In Bangkok, Thai police arrested a Japanese on charges of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

    Thai officials identified him as Toshihiko Otake, age 29, of Nigata, Japan and arrived on a flight from Tokyo early Sunday morning and checked into a hotel in downtown Bangkok.

    Mr. Otake was arrested by Thai police on sunday (Feb. 8) when he was about to board Air Siam flight back to Tokyo carrying 15 pistols and 450 rounds of ammunition in his band bag.

    Otake was one of the 14 member Japanese tour group. Following Otake's arrest, Thai police detained other 13 men for a through search. They were later allowed to board the jet bound for Tokyo.

    Thai authorities also asked the Japanese Embassy for background information on the fourteen men. Initial investigation showed that Otake was not a member of the Japanese Red Army terrorist group, according to the Thai Immigration chief.

    Otake was arrested when a customs official of Bangkok Airport spotted a leader bag containing several bullets in his attache case. A further search produced 10 Browning automatic pistols, one Walther automatic, two King Cobra handguns and 450 rounds of ammunition. Two other revolvers were found stuffed inside two toy turtles made of silk.
