  • Description

PAKISTAN BECAME AN INDEPENDENT NATION IN 1947 WHEN BRITISH INDIA WAS DIVIDED INTO TWO SEPARATE STATES. THE NEW COUNTRY ITSELF IS DIVIDED INTO TWO PROVINCES, EAST AND WEST PAKISTAN - 1,000 MILES OF INDIAN TERRITORY LIES BETWEEN THEM. THIS FILM WAS SHOT IN THREE OF THE PRINCIPAL CITIES OF THE WEST: KARACHI, ISLAMABAD AND LAHORE.

OVER TWO MILLION PEOPLE LIVE IN KARACHI, WHICH IS THE GREAT COMMERCIAL AND INDUSTRIAL CENTRE OF PAKISTAN. A LARGE PERCENTAGE OF THEM CAME FROM INDIA AS REFUGEES WHEN THE NEW COUNTRY WAS BORN. THE CITY - FORMERLY THE CAPITAL OF PAKISTAN - HAS GROWN TO ITS PRESENT SIZE IN A COMPARATIVELY SHORT TIME. WHEN THE BRITISH ANNEXED THE AREA IN 1843 THERE WAS ONLY A FISHING VILLAGE WITH A SMALL FORT AND A DITCH CALLED KALACHI-JO-KUN. TODAY, KARACHI IS THE MAIN SEAPORT OF WEST PAKISTAN AND HANDLES OVER 4 MILLION TONS OF CARGO A YEAR.

ISLAMABAD, WHICH WILL BE THE NEW CAPITAL CITY OF PAKISTAN, HAS BEEN UNDER CONSTRUCTION SINCE 1961. MORE THAN HALF THE CENTRAL GOVERNMENT OFFICES ARE NOW INSTALLED THERE, TOGETHER WITH MANY OF THE DIPLOMATIC MISSIONS. FOR THE LAST FEW YEARS THERE HAS BEEN A STEADY EXODUS OF GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENTS FROM KARACHI TO RAWALPINDI - THE INTERIM CAPITAL - AND THEN ON TO ISLAMABAD ITSELF.

LAHORE, THE CAPITAL OF WEST PAKISTAN, IS AN ANCIENT TOWN, RICH IN HISTORICAL MONUMENTS, WHICH WAS THE RESIDENCE OF THE MOGUL EMPERORS. THE REIGNS OF HUMAYUN, AKBAR, JAHANGIR, SHAH JAHAN AND AURANGZEB IN THE 16TH, AND 17TH. CENTURIES FORM THE GOLDEN PERIOD IN THE ANNALS AND ARCHITECTURE OF THE CITY. BUT FROM THE ACCESSION OF BAHADUR SHAH I UNTIL THE RULE OF RANJIT SINGH STARTED IN 1799, THE HISTORY OF LAHORE WAS ONE OF SUCCESSIVE INVASIONS AND CONQUESTS. THE SIKHS RULED THE CITY FROM 1765 UNTIL 1849 WHEN, AT THE END OF THE SECOND SIKH WAR, IT CAME UNDER BRITISH RULE WITH THE REST OF THE PUNJAB.
