    AN AIR SERVICES AGREEMENT TO REGULARISE AIR TRAFFIC RIGHTS ALREADY EXISTING BETWEEN GHANA AND SIERRA LEONE WAS SIGNED IN ACCRA ON WEDNESDAY (8 APRIL).

    THE AGREEMENT WAS SIGNED FOR GHANA BY MR. HARUNA ESSEKU, THE MINISTER OF TRANSPORT AND COMMUNICATIONS, AND FOR SIERRA LEONE BY HIS COUNTERPART MR. SEMBU FORNA. MR. FORNA HAD JUST BEGUN A FIVE -DAY VISIT TO GHANA.

    GHANA AIRWAYS HAD BEEN OPERATING TO SIERRA LEONE UNDER A GHANA-UNITED KINGDOM AGREEMENT EFFECTED WHEN SIERRA LEONE WAS A BRITISH COLONY. UNDER THIS NEW AGREEMENT GHANA AIRWAYS HAS FULL LANDING RIGHTS IN FREETOWN AND CAN, AMONG OTHER RIGHTS, PICK UP PASSENGERS THERE. BRITISH UNITED AIRWAYS OPERATING ON BEHALF OF THE SIERRA LEONE GOVERNMENT HAS RECIPROCAL RIGHTS.

    WEDNESDAY'S AGREEMENT ENDED SEVEN YEARS OF NEGOTIATIONS. SPEAKING AT THE SIGNING CEREMONY, MR. ESSEKU HOPED THE JOINT VENTURE WOULD BE CONCRETE EVIDENCE OF TRUE AFRICAN UNITY IN SPIRIT AND PURPOSE. HE FORESAW GREAT DEVELOPMENT OF THE AIRLINE INDUSTRY ON THE WEST COAST OF AFRICA.
