Background: Egypt's President Anwar Sadat returned to Cairo on Friday (12 Jan.) after a one-day official visit to Yugoslavia where he discussed the Middle East and other international issues with President Tito. Before going to Yugoslavia, President Sadat spent three days in Tripoli having consultations with the Libyan leader, Colonel Gaddafi.

Following the Yugoslav talks, a joint statement from the two countries appealed to all nations in the Mediterranean region not to remain indifferent to "the Israeli challenge" in the Middle East which, they said, endangered world peace. The talks in Tripoli concentrated on Further co-ordination in the confrontation with Israel and the planned merger or Egypt and Libya into one state.

SYNOPSIS: Egyptian Government ministers turned out in force at Cairo Airport on Friday to greet President Anwar Sadat, returning from talks in Yugoslavia and Tripoli. After discussions with Yugoslavia's President Tito, the two countries Issued a joint statement urging Mediterranean countries not to remain indifferent to what was called "the Israeli challenge."
President Sadat returned with assurances from President Tito that Yugoslavia continued to support the Arab cause, and an agreement to promote economic cooperation.

Before the Yugoslavia visit the Egyptian President had spent three days in Tripoli in talks with Libyan leader, Colonel Gaddafi. They discussed more co-ordination of the confrontation with Israel and the planned merger of Libya and Egypt into one state. There has been speculation that the official visit to Yugoslavia marks the start of increased-diplomatic activity by the Egyptian Government.
