  • Description

FACED WITH THE PROSPECT OF A COAL SHORTAGE FOLLOWING RHODESIA'S DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE IN 1965 THE NEIGHBOURING COUNTRY OF ZAMBIA DECIDED TO EXPAND HER OWN COALMINING INDUSTRY. LAST MONTH 40,000 TONS OF COAL LEFT A NEW OPENCAST SITE AT NKANDABWE NEAR LAKE KARIBA.

BEFORE UDI ALL THE COAL FOR ZAMBIA'S COPPER MINES CAME FROM THE WANKIE COLLIERY IN RHODESIA. THE NEW OPENCAST SITE IS LESSENING THE COUNTRY'S DEPENDENCE ON RHODESIA.

THE FIRST COAL WAS PRODUCED AT NKANDABWE IN APRIL LAST YEAR. NOW THE CONTROLLING COMPANY IS AIMING AT AN OUTPUT TARGET OF 50,000 TONS A MONTH. IT IS ESTIMATED THAT THERE IS 1,250,000 TONS IN RESERVE AT THE SITE.

THE NKANDABWE COAL COMPANY IS A CONSORTIUM OF THE ZAMBIAN GOVERNMENT AND THE COUNTRY'S TWO COPPER MINING GROUPS.

THE MAIN DEMAND FOR COAL IN ZAMBIAN IS FROM THE COPPER MINES -- AND THE AMOUNT USED ANNUALLY IS ABOUT ONE MILLION TONS. BUT SO FAR THE COAL IS NOT COMING OUT FAST ENOUGH. COPPER SMELTING IN ZAMBIA HAS BEEN CUT BACK BY 25 PER CENT.
