    South Vietnamese Government forces fighting in the Mekong Delta are putting up strong resistance to communist attacks in the area. In is also reported that Government morale has been boosted by U.S. President Ford's appeal to Congress for emergency aid to South Vietnam.

    In Saigon on Friday (II April) military sources said that he panic stage which marked the massive withdrawal from two-thirds of the country seemed to have passed.

    In the market town of Thu Thua fighting continued on Friday, after Viet Cong sapper penetration on Thursday (10 April).

    Government forces have been flushing the enemy out of houses and other buildings by firing into doorways and scouring rooftops.

    So far their efforts appear to have been successful -- although the town has been devastated by the fighting. Thu Thua is a strategic point on Highway One -- one of the roads into Saigon over which the Viet Cong are trying to gain complete control.
