  • Description

Former Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou was released from house arrest today (Sunday), but he has been warned by the army-backed government to stay out of politics. The 79-year-old Papandreou became a focal point for Greek liberal and left-wing sympathies after the country's military coup in April this year.

Mr. Papandreou was arrested on the night of the April 21 military coup, and was later placed under strict house arrest in his villa at Kastri, some 16 miles (25 kms) from Athens.

One of Mr. Papandreou's aides, Major Karambelas, spoke to the press today, and announced that the former premier would not be making an appearance.

Eight other deputies from Mr. Papandreou's Union of the Centre party were released simultaneously today. It has also been announced that next week the case of a further 22 politicians under detention will be examined.
