  • Description

The United States Secretary of State, Cyrus Vance met Japanese Foreign Minister Iichiro Hatoyama for private talks on Friday (24 June) during the two-day meeting of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development in Paris. It was one of a number of bilateral talks that Mr Vance has been holding during the conference.

SYNOPSIS: Inside the OECD building, delegates from other nations in the 24-member organisation have been urging Japan and Western Germany to reflate their economies.

The United States, through Mr Vance and Britain, are among those who want the two countries to help others by allowing their economies to move into deficit through reflation or changing their exchange rates. These entreaties drew no immediate response from either government. Japan and Western Germany, together with Holland and Switzerland, are running a collective surplus of 10 to 12 billion dollars this year. This equals the deficit that the United States alone expects to have.
