  • Description

Indonesia's President Soekarno - on a tour of twelve nations - addressed the national assembly in Tunis April 30, the day after his arrival in Tunisia for a 3-day official visit.

He compared what he called the revolution of Tunisia with that of Indonesia, and said both countries still had much to accomplish in economic, cultural and humanitarian fields. Indonesia's policy - he said - was one of peaceful co-existence; Indonesia wished to settle peacefully the problem of Irian (Netherlands New Guinea), but according to newspaper reports, Dutch warships were being sent to the area and Holland would be entirely responsible for any outbreak of violence.

Concluding his speech, President Soekarno said the Banding Conference had declared that all forms of colonialism were evil, and although there could be co-existence between the capitalist and socialist systems, there could be none between colonialists and those dominated by colonialism. Afterwards, he visited one of Tunisia's most important mosque, at Kairouan. He was accompanied by President Bourguiba's son.

President Soekarno left Indonesia April 1 for his current tour, and has already visited Hungary, Egypt and Guinea. Other countries on his itinerary are Yugoslavia, Rumania, Morocco, Portugal and Cuba.
