    TOMORROW, TUESDAY (MAY 30), THE 6TH BATTALION, ROYAL AUSTRALIAN REGIMENT, BIDS FAREWELL TO VIETNAM AFTER ONE YEAR OF SERVICE INVOLVING MORE THAN 21 MAJOR ANTI-VIETCONG OPERATIONS. THEY WILL BE REPLACED BY THE 2ND BATTALION FROM QUEENSLAND, WHICH ARRIVED RECENTLY ABOARD THE TROOP CARRIER "SYDNEY".

    ON SATURDAY (MAY 27), THE 6TH BATTALION CONDUCTED ITS LAST ONE-DAY SEARCH AND DESTROY MISSION IN AN AREA NORTH OF THEIR TASK FORCE HEADQUARTERS AT NUI DAT, IN PHUOC TUY PROVINCE, ABOUT 45 MILES SOUTHEAST OF SAIGON.

    THE TROOPS MOVED INTO THE AREA, DOMINATED BY RUBBER TREES IN ARMOURED PERSONNEL CARRIERS. THEY PICKED THEIR WAY WITH GREAT CARE... A WRONG STEP COULD HAVE MEANT DEATH BY VIETCONG BOOBY TRAPS OR MINES.

    THE TROOPS MADE NO CONTACT WITH THE VIETCONG...BUT 14 PERSONS FOUND IN A PROHIBITED AREA WERE ROUNDED UP FOR INTERROGATION.

    THE BATTALION'S OFFICERS AND MEN WON 13 HONOURS, INCLUDING A MILITARY CROSS. IT WON DISTINCTION IN THE BATTLE OF LONG TAN LAST AUGUST. IN THIS ALL-NIGHT FIGHT, 240 VIETCONG WERE KILLED AND 500 WOUNDED. THE AUSTRALIANS LOST 17 MEN, AND 28 OTHERS WOUNDED.
