Background: India's Vice-president, Dr.Radhakrishnan opened the Nineteenth National Games at New Delhi, Feb 27.

Twelve hundred men and women athletes marched by while Dr.Radhakrishnan took the salute. Following Olympic custom a symbolic torch was lit, by athlete Raunaq Singh. Bugle fanfares heralded the opening of the Games.

Among the competitors were two Indian hopes for Olympic medals. Zora Singh has bettered the Olympic 50 kilometre walk record - 4 hours 28 minutes 07.8 seconds - by two minutes, and Milkha Singh, winner of a medal in the Cardiff, Wales, Empire Games, looks a likely 200 metre finalist.
