    In India, dozens of people were arrested during a protest by members of the Sikh community on Sunday (11 November). The demonstration occurred almost exactly a year after a bloody clash between police and followers of the Sikh religion which left three people dead and one hundred and one hundred injured.

    SYNOPSIS: On Sunday, hundreds of orthodox Akali Sikhs demonstrated in Delhi against a rival Sikh group- the Nirankari Mission. The Akalis claim that the Nirankaris are trying to destroy the true faith of Sikhism. Police were out in full force to prevent any repetition of earlier clashes.

    Akali leaders have ben commanded to boycott the rival Nirankaris socially and in business dealings, not to marry into their families and not even to eat with them. The leader of the Nirankaris, Baba Gurbachan Singh, is said by his followers to be the reincarnation of God.

    This protest was led by Akali leader, Rachpal Singh. He was arrested by police soon after thee protest began.

    Tear gas ailed to put an end to the demonstration and scuffling between police and the Akalis broke out. The Sikhs -- who are required to wear turbans and sport turbans -- dominate India's armed forces,m although they from barely two and a half per cent of India's total population. They are also successful farmers.

    Most of those arrested were charged with attending a gathering of more than five people -- illegal under present regulations. The remaining Akalis then burnt an effigy of Nirankari leader, Baba Gurbachan Singh.
