    French film Pierre Clamenti appeared in a Rome court on Thursday (17 February) at the start of a controversial drugs trial supported by two star defence witnesses -- Italian directors Federico Fellini and Vittorio de Sica.

    Clementi was arrest almost seven months ago after police raided the Rome apartment of Signora Anna Maria Lauricella, a painter with whom he was staying. The couple have been in jail ever since and are charged with possessing and using drugs.

    The directors have been called as witnesses to the good character of Clementi and are also expected to testify that he was too poor to have ben bale to afford the 500,000 lire (about 330 sterling) which the drugs were worth.

    Clementi starred in Pier Paolo Pasolini's film "Pigety" and Luis Bunuel's "Bells de Jour".
