    A BOEING 727 JET AIRLINER CRASHED AND EXPLODED NEAR TAIPEI ON FRIDAY NIGHT (16 FEB) AND 21 OF THE 53 PEOPLE ON BOARD WERE KILLED.

    TWO BRITONS, TWO AMERICANS AND A KOREAN WERE LISTED AMONG THE DEAD. THE REST WERE CHINESE. OF THE 42 SURVIVORS, SIX WERE LISTED IN A SERIOUS CONDITION, AND 36 IN FAIR CONDITION.

    THE AIRCRAFT, OPERATED BY THE CIVIL AIR TRANSPORT LINE, WAS ON A FLIGHT FROM HONG KONG TO TAIPEI. IT CRASHED ON A TEA PLANTATION SEVEN MILES (11 KMS) WEST OF TAIPEI WHILE COMING TO LAND.

    ON IMPACT THE AIRCRAFT EXPLODED AND THE FUSELAGE WAS COMPLETELY BURNED OUT. RESCUE SQUADS SPED TO THE SCENE FROM POLICE STATIONS AND THE UNITED STATES AIR FORCE BASE AT LIKOU.

    A SURVIVOR WAS QUOTED AS SAYING PASSENGERS HAD BEEN TOLD TO FASTEN THEIR SAFETY BELTS FOR THE LANDING AT TAIPEI JUST BEFORE THE CRASH CAME.

    INVESTIGATIONS HAVE NOW BEGUN INTO THE CAUSE OF THE CRASH, THE SECOND C.A.T. ACCIDENT ON TAIWAN. FOUR YEARS AGO A DOMESTIC FLIGHT CRASHED NEAR TAICHUNG IN CENTRAL TAIWAN KILLING ALL 57 PASSENGERS AND CREW.
