United States Senator Edmund Muskie arrived at Lod Airport yesterday (Tuesday) at the start of a four-day visit to Israel.
United States Senator Edmund Muskie arrived at Lod Airport yesterday (Tuesday) at the start of a four-day visit to Israel. Senator Muskie, the Democrat candidate for Vice President in 1968, is widely tipped for Democrat Presidential nomination in 1972.
Senator Muskie, accompanied by his wife, was met by Israeli Foreign Ministry officials headed by Mr Elitzur, director of the North American division, and officials from the US Embassy.
During his visit, Senator Muskie is hoping to meet all Israeli Ministers holding major portfolios, including the Prime Minister, Mrs Golda Meir, Deputy Prime Minister Yigal Allon, Foreign Minister Abba Eban and Defence Minister Moshe Dayan. He is also expected to appear in an English-language television programme.
After Israel, Sen. Muskie is due to visit the United Arab Republic and the Soviet Union.. He is to call on West German Chancellor Willi Brandt on his way back to the United States. Speaking about his visit, Sen. Muskie said he had come first and foremost in order to learn. He said he had no intention of offering his services as a mediator in the Middle East.
