  • Description

AUSTRALIAN SKIER MALCOLM MILNE, COMPETING IN THE INTERNATIONAL MEN'S GIANT SLALOM ON THE DIFFICULT HAHNENKAMM TRACK AT KITZBUEHEL, DISQUALIFYING HIMSELF FROM THE SECOND GIANT SLALOM YESTERDAY (SATURDAY).

DUE TO THIN SNOW, THE MEN'S DOWNHILL WHICH WAS TO HAVE TAKEN PLACE ON FRIDAY, WAS CANCELLED AND THE GIANT SLALOM RUN IN ITS PLACE -- AN UNFORTUNATE THING FOR MILNE WHO IS MORE PROFICIENT AT THE DOWNHILL THAN THE SLALOM. AFTER HIS FALL, MILNE EXPLAINED THAT HE WAS STILL PLACED SEVENTH WITH 25 POINTS IN THE OVERALL WORLD CUP STANDING -- AND THAT HE EXPECTED TO GO EVEN FURTHER BACK AS MORE SLALOMS AND GIANT SLALOMS TOOK PLACE, BUT THAT HE HOPED TO RECOUP SOME POINTS IN THE DOWNHILL AT MEGEV NEXT WEEK.

THE FALL AT KITZBUEHEL OCCURRED ABOUT TWO-THIRDS OF THE WAY DOWN THE SLOPE WHEN, AFTER CUTTING VERY FINE TO THE GATES IN THE EARLY PART OF THE RUN, MILNE CAME TOO CLOSE TO A MARKER POLE AND CAUGHT THE TIP OF HIS SKI -- FLYING HEAD-OVER-HEELS. HE REGAINED HIS FEET, AND SEEMED UNABLE TO STOP HIS DOWNHILL RUSH -- BUT WAS BEATEN DOWN BY HIS OWN SKI WHICH CONTINUED RACING DOWN THE SLOPE ON ITS OWN, RIGHT OVER THE FEET OF AN ASTOUNDED CAMERAMAN.
