  • Description

TOKYO YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) HELD ITS ANNUAL REVIEW OF ITS FIRE FIGHTING SERVICES AND RECORDED A TURNOUT OF 170 FIRE ENGINES, CHEMICAL CARS AND AMBULANCES AND NEARLY 5,000 FIREMEN.

AMONG THE FIREMEN WERE 2,000 VOLUNTEERS WHO GAVE THEIR TRADITIONAL PERFORMANCE OF ACROBATIC SKILLS ON TOP OF THE TALL LADDERS.

THERE WERE ABOUT 8,000 FIRES IN THE JAPANESE CAPITAL LAST YEAR -- THAT'S ABOUT 22 A DAY -- WHICH IS WATCHED OVER BY 10,000 FIREMEN AND 30,000 VOLUNTEERS.

THE 200-YEAR-OLD PARADE AT TOKYO'S HARUMI PIER WAS WATCHED THIS YEAR BY 40,000 PEOPLE.

TOKYO'S FIREMEN SAY THAT NINE OUT OF TEN FIRES THEY TACKLE WERE CAUSED EITHER BY CARELESS HANDLING OF CIGARETTE BUTTS OR MISUSE OF MATCHES BY CHILDREN -- COMMON CAUSES IN MOST BIG CITIES.

BUT THE FIREMEN ADD ANOTHER REASON -- A REASON WHICH KILLED 119 PEOPLE LAST YEAR: THE JAPANESE LIKE USING KEROSENE HEATERS IN THEIR HOMES BUILT LARGELY OF WOOD AND PAPER.
