REPORTER: "The engine of the first train had failed and it was stationary in the middle of the long sweep of Invagari Bay when the Glasgow to Aberdeen express came round the corner, The express had a quarter of a mile to stop, but it didn't and collided with the rear of the first train with such force that both reared up in a tangle of tearing metal. The two-man crew of the express died instantly....."



....."The impact tossed three of the carriages down the 20 yard embankment and into the muddly waters of the Tay estuary"



SCOTT: "There was a tremendous bang and the carriage must have gone over 2 or 3 times. I managed to get up. There was a fellow down the other side - I managed to get him up and he was unhurt. There was an elderly couple, badly shaken........a doctor came in seconds after the carriage came to a stop and attended to her till the ambulance came."



MACLEDOD: "They got the doors open near enough straight away and we were upside down. As I got out the ambulance men and the firemen were all coming down."



REPORTER: "The British Rail enquiry team has only recently finished an investigation..into another rail disaster that happened in April in Paisley, killing 7 people, so this has been the second major Scottish rail crash within the last six months. This time within sight of the Tay bridge, scene of history's most famous rail accident. Once again the enquiry team will begin their investigations, this time concentrating on the signalling system here which may have led these two trains to disaster"
