  • Description

The National Day celebrations which took place in East Pakistan on Tuesday (March 23) have proved to be a curtainraiser to death riots as reports came in on Thursday (March 25)to say an unknown number of people have been killed in several towns.

One report said East Pakistan Awami League leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman called a general strike for Saturday (March 27) in protest against reported army shootings, in which 35 people are said to have died. Another said more than 100 people, including 30 police, were injured in the industrial town of Lyallpur following a day of clashes between left and right wing factions, looting, and large-scale vandalism.

Meanwhile, the 11-day-old talks in Dacca between East and West Pakistan leaders appeared to have come to an end as President Yahya Khan returned to Karachi. Other reports said six ship loads of West Pakistan troops had been put ashore at strife-torn Chittagong and Chlana in East Pakistan. Other forces were also arriving in Dacca by air, said the report. As the situation grew confused, Dacca Radio reported that more than 130 people had been killed or injured when troops machine-gunned large crowds in the Rangpur and Chittagong districts.

Telecommunications between East and West Pakistan -- separated by India -- were confined to army radio telephone and what was described as "army radio teletype." The troops landed at Dacca were reported to have been flown in via Burma and China, as direct flights between the two countries over Indian territory have been banned by the Indian Government.

VISNEWS staff writer JOHN BRITTLE who flew to Karachi from London last week, sent this film of Tuesday's National Day celebrations in Dacca despite difficulties in shipping film out of the country. The accompanying script brings the confused situation to date as far as possible.
