  • Description

Bishop Able Muzrewa, President of the African National Council on Thursday (20 July) night urged the Rhodesian Government to call a convention of all races in an attempt to solve the country's seven-year-old constitutional dispute and achieve a settlement with Britain.

Bishop Muzorewa spoke to a meeting of more than one-thousand people in a white suburb of Salisbury. This was the first meeting held in the heart of a white residential area and the Bishop Muzorewa told the predominantly white audience that by coming together the different races in Rhodesia could achieve a just and democratic settlement.

He said that the negative feeling of the Africans to the Anglo-Rhodesian settlement was genuine and spontaneous. Bishop Muzorewa went on to say that the agreement between Britain and Rhodesia could only be reworked by Rhodesians coming "together in order to iron out our own differences".
