THE UNITED STATES EMERGED AS CLEAR WINNERS IN THE GOLD MEDAL TABLE, BUT WEST GERMANY HAD THE MOST SUCCESSFUL TEAM IN ATHLETICS EVENTS. CLOSING DAY FEATURES INCLUDED THE WOMEN'S 800 METRES FINAL AND THE MEN'S 5,000 METRES FINAL.

    AMERICA'S SWIMMING SUPREMACY CARRIED THE COUNTRY TO THE HEAD OF THE GOLD MEDAL TABLE. THE UNITED STATES WON 32 GOLD MEDALS, FOLLOWED BY JAPAN WITH 21 AND WEST GERMANY WITH EIGHT. WEST GERMANY COLLECTED ALL ITS GOLD MEDALS IN ATHLETICS EVENTS.

    AN EIGHT-NATION COMMUNIST BOYCOTT MARRED THE GAMES TO SOME EXTENT, AND LOWERED THE STANDARD OF ATHLETICS COMPETITION.

    IN THE WOMEN'S 800 METRES FINAL YESTERDAY MISS M. MANNING OF THE UNITED STATES WAS THE WINNER. MISS A. HOFFMAN OF CANADA CAME SECOND, AND MISS E. OSTBERG OF SWEDEN WAS THIRD.

    IN THE MEN'S 5,000 METRES, CRACK AMERICAN DISTANCE RUNNER VAN NELSON WAS BEATEN BY JAPAN'S KEISUKE SAWAKI. JACKSON OF BRITAIN CAME THIRD.

    CLOSING CEREMONIES IN THE TOKYO NATIONAL STADIUM WERE ATTENDED LAST NIGHT BY CROWN PRINCE AND PRINCESS HITACHI AND 50,000 SPECTATORS.

    SOME 1,286 ATHLETES FROM 34 COUNTRIES TOOK PART IN A MARCH PAST, TO THE ACCOMPANIMENT OF MASSED CHOIRS AND ORCHESTRA.

    THE UNIVERSIADE FLAME DIED OUT TO THE STRAINS OF "AULD LANG SYNE".
