  • Description

A bab business that could bring in jumbo profits... at least, it's foreign exchange that Zambia hopes to get from its export of baby elephants. The first four elephants left Zambia this week - two for Britain and two for West Germany.

The elephants' departure marked the start of a new export business organised by the Zambian Game Department.

At present, there are something like 18,000 elephants in Zambia, and over-population with insufficient feeding areas can mean starvation for many. The elephant population is therefore carefully controlled to ensure their survival.

A Game Department official says it's now intended to export about 50 to 70 baby elephants a year. And with each one worth more than its weight in foreign exchange, a year's business might well result in jumbo profits.

Two of the first exports are now happily installed in ??? North of London. The elephants, Katie and Susie, are both six to seven months old and weigh about 400 pounds (200 kilos).
