    President of the Congo People's Republic, Marien Ngouabi, inaugurated a new timber port on the banks of the Congo River on Saturday (23 October). In the past ten years, commercial traffic on the river has increased considerably and the completion of the new facility will be an aid in handling timber from the Central African Republic and south-eastern Cameroun. The new port will also allow the output of timber from the north-eastern part of Congo-Brazzaville to be increased by as much as forty per cent.

    SYNOPSIS: President of the People's Republic of the Congo, Marien Ngouabi took part in the inauguration of a new timber port on the Congo River on saturday. The new facility is located on the outskirts of Brazzaville.

    In the past ten years, commercial traffic on the river has increased considerably and the construction of the new facility will greatly improve Congo-Brazzaville's trading potential. As the President cut the ribbon, officials from the congo and France looked on.

    President Ngouabi and officials later toured the port which is expected to allow the output of timber form the northern part of the nations to be increased by as much as forty per cent. the facility will also aid in the handling of timber from the Central African Republic and south-eastern Cameroun. The port cost almost nine-hundred thousand pounds and was financed by the European development fund, the Trans-Congolese Communications agency and the French Aid and Cooperation fund. Officials hope that the modern facility will be able to accommodate the steadily mounting traffic of timber on the river.
