    A HUGE RALLY WAS HELD IN LAGOS LAST SATURDAY (OCTOBER 10) BY THE NEWLY FORMED UNITED PROGRESSIVE GRAND ALLIANCE (UPGA) TO OBTAIN SUPPORT IN NIGERIA'S COMING FEDERAL ELECTIONS.

    THE PARTY PRESIDENT AND PREMIER OF EASTERN NIGERIA, DR. MICHAEL OKPARA, OUTLINED TO THE BIG CROWD A NUMBER OF CHANGES TO THE COUNTRY'S CONSTITUTION THAT THE PARTY WOULD INITIATE IF ELECTED TO POWER.

    THESE INCLUDED WRITING THE GOAL OF SOCIALISM INTO THE CONSTITUTION. THE PARTY, DR. OKPARA SAID, WOULD ALSO CREATE A NEW STATES IN NIGERIA, AND LEGISLATE AGAINST TRIBALISM.

    DR. OKPARA PROMISED THAT THE GAOLED LEADER OF THE ACTION GROUP, CHIEF OBAFENI AWOLOWO, WOULD BE RELEASED IF THE GRAND ALLIANCE CAME TO POWER. THIS WOULD BE DONE "BECAUSE OF HIS PAST POSITIVE CONTRIBUTION TO THE BUILDING OF THE NATION, AND WHAT THE CAN STILL CONTRIBUTE."
    ONE OF CHIEF AWOLOWO'S SUPPORTERS, MR. BISI ONABANJO, WAS CARRIED SHOULDER HIGH AT ONE STAGE DURING THE RALLY. OTHER SPEAKERS INCLUDED CHIEF AWOLOWO'S WIFE, AND THE PRESENT ACTING LEADER OF THE ACTION GROUP, ALHAJI ADENGBENRO.

    THE PREMIER OF THE NEW MID-WEST STATE OF NIGERIA, CHIEF DENNIS OSADEBAY, AND NIGERIAN MINISTER OF AVIATION, DR. MBADIWE, WERE AMONG THOSE WHO ATTENDED THE RALLY.

    (THE DATE OF THE NEXT ELECTIONS FOR THE FEDERAL HOUSE OF NIGERIA IS EXPECTED TO BE SOME TIME IN DECEMBER. THE UPGA WILL CONTEST THE ELECTIONS IN ALLIANCE WITH THE ACTION GROUP. MEMBERS OF THE UPGA PREVIOUSLY BELONGED TO THE GOVERNING NATIONAL COUNCIL OF NIGERIAN CITIZENS.)
