  • Description

THE BATTERED AIRCRAFT CARRIER MELBOURNE, FLAG-SHIP OF THE AUSTRALIAN NAVY, ARRIVED IN SINGAPORE YESTERDAY (6 JUNE) FOR REPAIRS FOLLOWING THE COLLISION WITH THE AMERICAN DESTROYER "FRANK E. EVANS" ON TUESDAY. SEVENTY-FOUR MEN WERE KILLED IN THE DISASTER.

THE GIANT CARRIER SUFFERED SUPERFICIAL DAMAGE TO ITS FRONT SECTION INCLUDING THE PROW, ALONG THE BOW TO BELOW THE WATERLINE AND TO ITS FLIGHT DECK. THE COLLISION OCCURRED IN THE SOUTH CHINA SEA DURING AN EXERCISE BY SEATO NAVAL FORCES.

THE 600-MILE JOURNEY FROM THE CRASH SCENE TO SINGAPORE ENDED FOR THE MELBOURNE WHEN IT SAILED INTO THE HARBOUR AT HALF-SPEED. THE CARRIER WAS SIX HOURS BEHIND SCHEDULE AS SHE HAD STOPPED TO DUMP HUNDREDS OF TONS OF AVIATION FUEL INTO THE SEA.

THE CARRIER'S 1,200 CREW, 20 AIRCRAFT AND HELICOPTERS WERE ASSEMBLED ON DECK. THE SHIP'S BAND PLAYED AND THE FLAG FLEW AT HALF-MAST, WHEN THE MELBOURNE ENTERED PORT.

AT A NEWS CONFERENCE ON BOARD, THE MELBOURNE'S COMMANDER, CAPTAIN J.P. STEVENSON SAID THAT ONLY MINOR REPAIRS WERE NEEDED BEFORE PLANES COULD TAKE OFF FROM HER DECK. HE ALSO SAID THAT THE COLLISION OCCURRED ON A MOONLIT NIGHT WITH GOOD VISIBILITY AND A CALM SEA.

THE COMMANDER OF THE DESTROYER, CAPTAIN ALBERT S. McLENORE, SAID HE WAS CLAD ONLY IN A TOWEL AFTER SWIMMING TO SAFETY, WHEN HE MET THE MELBOURNE'S COMMANDER ON THE BRIDGE. HE WENT ON TO SAY THAT HE THREW HIS ARMS AROUND HIM AND BOTH MEN SAID 'I'M SORRY'.

THE MELBOURNE WAS INVOLVED IN ANOTHER COLLISION IN 1964 IN WHICH THE AUSTRALIAN DESTROYER VOYAGER SANK WITH A HEAVY LOSS OF LIFE.

CAPTAIN STEVENSON WILL ATTEND AN INQUIRY INTO THE DISASTER OPENING IN THE PHILIPPINES ON MONDAY (9 JUNE).
