SYNOPSIS: There are three United States university crews in the Grand Challenge Cup -- the Premier eights event -- and perhaps the strongest is the University of Washington eight. The rowing connoisseurs were out in force -- but so were the people more interested in the Henley fashions of yesteryear. What better way to spend an English Summer's day.

The University of Washington eight showed they'll be a real challenge to Britain's new national squad by easily beating the Midland Bank eight in this event.

Competition along the winding one mile 550-yard (2,100 metres) course was tough in the first round of the Diamond Sculls, the main single sculls event. In gusty winds, New Zealand's John Alexander was too strong for Britain's Alan Whitwell. Alexander has had a lot of strong-wind practice in his home country.

Another British eight, the National Westminster Bank fell victims to Koninklijke Roeivereniging of Belgium in the Thames Challenge Cup for Eights opening round.

But Britain made up for their otherwise gloomy Thursday when the City Orient Rowing Club had an easy victory over Ndola Boating and Sailing Club of Zambia in another race in the Thames Challenge Cup series. Henley Regatta remains the prince of British rowing events, but it's lost much of its international significance through the absence of oarsmen from Eastern Europe.
