  • Description

The six Cyprus mayors who went to Athens at the request of Archbishop Makarios, Enosis leader, to discuss the British plan for the island, returned by air on Sunday evening, June 22nd. They were accompanied by the Acting Ethnarch, Makario's close adviser, Bishop Anthimos of Kitium.

No official statement has been made about their future attitude to the Cyprus problem. Some reporters understand that they have received instruction to preserve calm at all costs. Another source says that they have been told to "carry on the struggle and to retaliate against eventual Turkish attacks."
Before leaving Athens, however, they repeated that Makarios has a plan of his own for a peaceful solution in Cyprus. This rejects, of course, the British plan for co-partnership and the Turkish demand for partition, but great hope is being placed on the moderate tone of the Archbishop's letter to the Governor, Sir Hugh Foot, last week.
