    Background: NURBURGRING, WEST GERMANY

U.S. rider Freddie Spencer returned to form with a comfortable victory in the West German 500cc Motor Cycling Grand Prix at Nurburgring on May 27. He had abandoned his newly-developed four-cylinder Honda to revert to the three-cylinder machine which had taken him to the world 500cc title last season. In second place was Spencer's compatriot, this year's championship leader Eddie Lawson. Spencer led from the start and finished nearly 16 seconds ahead of Lawson, in 52 minutes, 37.98 seconds. He also set a lap record of one minute 43.43 seconds, attaining an average speed of 148.08 km on the new 4.1 km track. Lawson retained the world championship lead he consolidated in Austria on May 20. With seven races left, Lawson has 69 points, with Frenchman Raymond Roche in second place, one point ahead of Spencer at 42 points.
