  • Description

Over 500 American Arabs marched in procession along New York's 5th Avenue on Thursday (1st October) in mourning for Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser.

The procession coincided with celebrations for the Jewish New Year, and the mourners were delayed until local Jews had left the nearby Temple Emanuel, in order to avoid any confrontation.

There were no incidents during the procession, but the Arab marchers chanted loudly as they waved flower-adorned photographs of the late leader. Many placards were written in both English and Arabic and featured such statements as 'Nasser died for his people" and "Palestine will be liberated."
The New York pavements were not, however, as crowded as usual. The estimated two million Jews in the city were either at services in other districts, or had taken the day off to celebrate their New Year.

The marchers were accompanied by a police escort as they made their way to the steps of the United Arab Republic Mission where they met officials.
