  • Description

One person was killed and more than 50 injured when a tornado swept through the suburban township of West Bloomfield, north-west of Detroit, Michigan, on Saturday night (20 March).

Police said more than 100 houses were wrecked during the tornado, and damage is expected to total millions of pounds. The destruction was confined to an area only 100 yards (90 metres) wide and less than a mile (1.6 kilometres) long.

The only fatality occurred when the powerful winds lifted a woman's car from the ground and slammed it down on top of another car.

Rescue workers combed the wreckage on Sunday morning, but despite the serious damage done, no other serious casualties were reported.

Despite the high cost of the damage, residents said they were thankful the loss of life had been so low.
