  • Description

LAUGHLIN STEWART OF SCOTLAND WON THE 26TH HANNUT CROSS-COUNTRY RACE IN BELGIUM TODAY (SUNDAY), BEATING MOHAMMED GAMMOUDI OF TUNISIA INTO SECOND PLACE.

HANNUT WAS BITTERLY COLD, AND THERE WAS SNOW JUST BEFORE THE RACE STARTED. GAMMOUDI, THE OLYMPIC 10,000 METRES SILVER MEDALLIST, TRIED THE FIRST ATTACK, AND HE LED THE FIELD OVER MOST OF THE NINE KILOMETRES (5 1/2 MILES) COURSE.

THEN NORTH, OF ENGLAND, MADE A BREAK, COMING UP CLOSE BEHIND THE TUNISIAN. BUT WHEN STEWART MADE HIS EFFORT HE SUCCEEDED, TO COME IN FIRST IN 27 MINUTES 8 SECONDS, JUST 6 SECONDS AHEAD OF GAMMOUDI.

IT WAS A GOOD DAY FOR BRITON: ENGLISH RUNNERS TAGG AND NORTH TOOK THIRD AND FOURTH PLACES, GORIS OF BELGIUM WAS FIFTH, FREARY, ANOTHER ENGLISHMAN, SIXTH, AND ALDER OF SCOTLAND CAME IN SEVENTH.
