  • Description

In a desperate bid to bring their plight to the attention of the Italian authorities, homeless people in Rome have occupied three churches in the city, including the famous Basilica of St. Paul.

The people who have taken over the churches say their action is symbolic. They want to show the church and the public that something must be done about the estimated 100,000 people who do not have adequate housing in a city where thousands of new flats stand empty.

At St. Paul's, the parish priests have been sympathetic, and have turned on the heating for the families who have moved in. The other churches, St. Policarpo and St. Gievanni Bosco are both in modern suburbs. Police arrived at St. Policarpo and Thursday (7 March) but they did not evict the squatters.

Earlier attempts to "squat in" the empty apartments in outlying areas of Rome were less successful. About 200 apartments which had been taken over were cleared by Italian police who arrested about twenty people - most of them women.
