    TODAY THERE WERE QUEUES A KILOMETRE LONG AT THE FOUR CROSSING POINTS FOR CARS AND PEDESTRIANS. THOUSANDS MORE CROSSED BY THE OVERHEAD RAILWAY.

    MEANWHILE, WITH THE CHRISTMAS AGREEMENT COMING TO AN END WEST BERLIN HAS TAKEN THE FIRST STEP TOWARDS NEGOTIATING A MORE PERMANENT, MORE COMPREHENSIVE AND MORE EFFICIENT ARRANGEMENT ENABLING WEST BERLINERS TO CROSS THE WALL.

    ITS NEW IDEAS HAVE BEEN APPROVED BY THE THREE WESTERN ALLIES AND THE BONN GOVERNMENT. EAST GERMANY'S GOVERNMENT IS LIKELY TO REPLY TOWARDS THE END OF NEXT WEEK.
