  • Description

The Soviet fleet is almost a permanent fixture on George's Bank.... a fishing ground running southern??? from the mouth of the Bay of ???. The Russians are at sea for months at a time...their catches are taken to a large factory ships positioned in the middle of the smaller working fleet. This is the Vledivostok.. capable of carrying hundred of tons of processed fish. The film was shot from the decks of the United States Coast Guard ship Vigilant. The mother ships are comparable in size to large ocean-going freighters, and in smooth weather like this, apparently will work in tandem. The ships are under regular surveillance....periodic mention is made of the amount of electronic gear that they carry....they have been frequently accused of spying on both Canada and the United States. Rear Admiral William Landymore, dismissed by the government last year, had insisted that this was the case. The Canadian navy makes no regular checks, but it's understood that the United States keeps them under aerial surveillance. The Soviet ships are well outside any territorial limit.....as much as two or three hundred miles....and generally, fisherman working the same area respect their right to be there. Some have expressed concern about the size of the fleet, and possible effects on stocks, but there have been few reported incidents ??? although some gear has been ???. The mother ships are sea-going factories. The trawlers come alongside at sea, discharge into the larger ships, where the catch is immediately processed...even to packaging for the market. Conspicuous by their absence are the gull,s who never miss a free meal. They'd starve behind a Russian mother ship....nothing is wasted.
