  • Description

Emergency refugee flights to Guam from Saigon were resumed late yesterday (Sunday) after a 48-hour suspension to allow American authorities to catch up with caring for the 20,000 evacuees already flown to the Pacific island.

While Guam authorities fought to keep up with the human tide, refugees from Saigon over the past two days were sent to Wake Island or to the Subic Bay naval base in the Philippines.

Britain's Queen Elizabeth has cancelled a stopover in Guam because of the refugee problem, saying she doesn't want to divert authorities coping with the refugee flow.

As refugees pour into Guam, military construction crews continue working around the clock to erect tents - the latest batch going up on a former Japanese airfield. The Americans estimate they are putting up tents for 6,000 people each day. In addition, all available unused or abandoned military barracks are being quickly converted to house refugees.
