  • Description

A convoy carrying medicine and food for victims of the fighting in Jordan today (Friday, Sept. 25th) crossed the Allenby Bridge into Jordan.

The convoy, of some 20 trucks, was organised by the Red Cross Mission in Israel and the United Nations Works and Relief Agency (UNWRA).

The mission was led by the head of the International Red Cross in Israel, M. Laurent Marti. It carried tons of supplies, much of which had been collected in Arab towns and villages on the West Bank of the River Jordan.

The convoy hoped to bring back wounded for treatment at hospitals in Jerusalem, which were preparing to cope with the casualties.

But when M. Marti returned to Jerusalem late tonight (Friday) he said no wounded were brought back by the trucks because Jordanian Army field hospitals were able to cope with the casualties in areas visited by the convoy.

When Red Cross officials with the convoy returned they were surrounded by Arab residents of Jericho seeking news of relatives.

The officials said that some eight tons of supplies had been distributed in Amman's suburbs, but the main part of the convoy had been held up by Jordanian authorities and permission was being sought for it to proceed to the Jordanian capital.

The mission hopes to return to Jordan again tomorrow.
